For the Char Siu Marinade
¼cuphoisin sauce
¼cupsoy sauce
2tablespoonshoney
1tablespoonChinese rice wine or dry sherry
1tablespoonoyster sauce
1teaspoonChinese five-spice powder
1teaspoonminced garlic
1teaspoonminced ginger
1tablespoonred food coloringoptional
For the Chicken
4bone-inskinless chicken thighs (or boneless, if preferred)
Optional Garnish
Sliced green onions
Sesame seeds
Instructions
Mix hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, rice wine, oyster sauce, five-spice, garlic, ginger, and optional food coloring in a bowl.
Coat chicken thighs with marinade in a bag or dish. Refrigerate 2–3 hours.
Heat grill to medium-high or oven to 375°F (190°C).
Cook ChickenGrill: Cook 20–25 minutes, turning and basting, until internal temp reaches 165°F (74°C).Roast: Bake 25–30 minutes, basting once or twice, until golden and cooked through.
Let rest 5 minutes. Slice, garnish with green onions and sesame seeds, and serve with rice, noodles, or vegetables.
